A quarterly measure of the change in total labor compensation — wages plus benefits — controlled for shifts in the mix of jobs.
Why investors care
The Fed considers the ECI the cleanest gauge of wage inflation because it holds job composition constant, unlike average hourly earnings.
What to watch
Because it’s composition-adjusted, a hot ECI is harder to dismiss than a hot AHE print.
