Definition

GDP is the inflation-adjusted value of all goods and services produced in the U.S. It is reported quarterly at an annualized rate in three successive estimates as more source data arrive.

Why investors care

It is the broadest scorecard of economic growth; the headline and the price deflator inside it move rates and risk assets, and define recessions.

What to watch

Look past the headline to real final sales to private domestic purchasers — the cleanest read on underlying demand.
